ABOUT US

We are building a tech factory in Oakland.

We are revitalizing Oakland’s deep roots in manufacturing. Our onsite factory, well-suited for short-run, small batch, bespoke, and prototyping production, is focusing on bringing the future of manufacturing back to America. BlueSprout provides the solution when you’ve outgrown TechShop or your garage, or you’ve graduated from an accelerator and do not believe that everything has to be made in China.

  • INDUSTRIAL SPACE

Our 60,000 square foot industrial-zoned facility complete with onsite factory, industrial co-working space, and work/live units is perfect for real physical work. Manufacturing, prototyping, bespoke products, physical goods, hardware, messy work, or robots; this is the place to be when you graduate from the garage.

  • HIGH-TECH TOOLS

Our 17,000 square feet of factory space has the tools to get the job done. Our tools include precision large-scale digital fabrication facilities with high-end CNC mills, CNC gantry router, CNC Lathe, and multi-axis robot arms, onsite injection molding, rotoforming, thermoforming, and advanced composite fabrication, high-speed prototyping with professional grade 3D printers, laser cutters, and desktop mills.

  • MENTORSHIP

We provide a great team to help you start, run, and grow your business. With experts in business, software, hardware, and industrial production we can support your business so you can focus on what’s really important: your work and ideas.

APPROACH

Our approach is Different

BlueSprout believes that young companies with new ideas need long-term support to be successful.  We call it the Pull approach compared to the Push approach that other incubators and accelerators employ. A Push approach is having a set application date followed by a fixed schedule of intense R&D, prototyping, and mentoring where applicants are provided a small about of seed funding in exchange for a sliver of equity.  The goal for those incubators is to push the companies to a “demo day” in a few months to create room for the next group of applicants.

BlueSprout’s pull approach takes a very different long term view on how to grow ideas and companies.  We don’t have set application dates and forced completion dates.  We know that some great companies will take more time to be truly successful.  The Pull approach is patient and supportive.  We understand that not all new companies can be crammed into a four-month development timeframe.

Problem Solving and Pivots

BlueSprout’s main goal in starting new companies is to be of service to help solve your problems. If you are developing briliant hardware, we know that solving those problems takes time. This is the main premise behind our Pull approach. A great example of the problem solving processs we employ is summarized by William Pietri’s flowchart.

Filling the gap between TechShop and China

TechShop is great to build a single thing. China is great if you need to build a million of a thing. BlueSprout fills the gap between TechShop and going to China. By having high-grade tools and a trained flexible workforce, BlueSprout helps local companies rapidly prototype and produce small-batches of products.

    BlueSprout and TechShop

When I talk with people about BlueSprout, they often ask me, “How do you feel about TechShop?” The short answer is, we love them. TechShop has done a fantastic job at getting people to remember the American tradition of making things. If you look at how successful their education and outreach efforts have been, it […]

  • Why manufacture locally?

When I talk to people about BlueSprout, one of the questions I often get is “Why make stuff in Oakland?”  There are a couple very simple answers to that question. The first one is all about time. When you do your prototyping and manufacturing in Oakland down the hall or street from your office, you […]

  • Why I started the Older Entrepreneurs Investors Club

I was accidentally informed that I was officially old. It happened about five weeks ago in our regular Founder’s meeting for BlueSprout. I was going through my list of topics to cover and inquired how the recent drone and digital manufacturing meetups were doing. My younger cofounders said they were thinking I should start a […]

  • What our special F-7 Occupancy means

Oakland has an interesting history of being one of the first places in the country to allow for what’s called “Live / Work”, and has some very particular and wonderful statues to support it like no other city does. Our BlueSprout building enjoys an Oakland-specific “F-7″ occupancy, which is a unique combination of F-1 (heavy […]

  • Why Brain Collisions are good for Startups

I am very fortunate to work with brilliant people every day. The best thing about hanging around big brain people is what happens when their brains collide. This was one of the most important founding principles when I started BlueSprout. I wanted a place for brain collisions to happen often and every day. Let me […]
